Chapter 13
_________
Seize The Day
Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you waitto begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, “Most men leadlives of quiet desperation.” Don’t be resigned to that. Break out!
~John Keating, Dead Poets Society
Dane Holroyd had just returned from an assignment that involved hands-on support of a video project for a program that the National Football League had set up to help young people. As summer was fading he used every waking moment to surf, skateboard hang out with friends. Lying in bed at night he did occasionally give some thought to the upcoming school year. He had to, this would be his final year at the MAD Academy (Multimedia Arts and design academy at Santa Barbara High School).
Dane would need to come up with a Senior Project. His only thought was, I must do something unusual and, maybe, about somebody doing good. The familiar tones from Dane’s mobile dragged his mind into the present. He looked down and saw Dan Williams name on the small screen. Dan was director of his Academy. Dan? What could he want?
“Hi Dane, how was the NFL?
“Good. Learned a lot.”
“Have you got a minute?”
“Yeah, no problem.” Dane was all ears.
Dan went on to recount the bare details of his meeting with John and Douglas, Florencia’s story was the appetizer. Then he got to the entree.
“It could mean going to India and Mozambique. How would you feel about that?”
“The story’s solid.
To go and film it would be amazing. What a project. Count me in.”
“Great. I couldn’t see you turning down a chance like this. I have a couple of other people in mind, but who do you………….”
Dane stopped Dan right there. “Samsun and Ella, definitely.”
“You beat me to it, yes those were the two that immediately came to mind.”
“Shall I text them?” Dane’s brain was buzzing with excitement and could barely restrain himself at the opportunity that had been set before him.
“Yes, go ahead - I can’t imagine them not being up for something like this. Let me know how you get on. Oh, one other thing. The two guys leading the team would love to get together with both of us to explore this further. I’ll let you know when it is arranged. Sounds cool, don’t you think?”
“Oh man, I can’t wait for school to start! See ya.”
Dane was beside himself. India and Mozambique, this was going to be awesome. Selling the idea to Samsun took about the same amount of time as Dan pitching the possibility to Dane.
The beginnings of a team were emerging, Landon, John’s son had attended MAD. John mentioned to Douglas the idea that savvy social media guys might be interested in doing something worthwhile. They had met with Dan and the possibility of HOW and MAD working together for the good of Florencia and landmine victims. HOW International, which stands for Help One Walk, had been set up as a nonprofit by John and Douglas with a view to giving prosthetic legs to landmine victims and developing lifetime humanitarians.
